Born in Glenamaddy, County Galway. He worked as a clerk in Dublin Corporation. He was a member of both the Gaelic League and the I.R.B. He was a founder member of the Irish Volunteers. He was one of the seven men who signed the Proclamation. He is buried in Arbour Hill, Dublin along with the other leaders of the Easter Rising.
