Thomas Crofton Croker 1798-1854

Born in Cork. He was a folklorist and the first significant collector of Irish folk narrative. His Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland went into six editions and was translated into German by the Brothers Grimm. Other works include Legends of Cork, Legends of Kerry, Ireland Myths and Legends, Popular Songs of Ireland, The Adventures of Barney Mahoney and My Village Versus Our Village. He was a member of both the Swedish and Danish Antiquary Societies and was registrar of the Royal Literary Society. He was a son-in-law of the painter Francis Nicholson. He was buried in London.
