Maria Edgeworth 1767-1849

Born in Black Bourton, Oxfordshire. Her early works on education and children’s stories were written in collaboration with her father. Her first and most famous novel was Castle Rackrent which brought her immediate success. Further works were also well received. These includes Belinda, Tales of Fashionable Life, Helen, Patronage, The Absentee and Ormond. Castle Rackrent was a very influential novel not only in England but beyond, and authors like Walter Scott acknowledged the debt they owed to Edgeworth. She is buried in County Longford.
