William Percy French 1854-1920 Born in
Cloonyquinn, County Roscommon. He began work as a civil engineer but after
being laid off he edited a comic journal and then became a full-time
entertainer using his own material. His works include The First Lord
Liftinant and Other Tales, The Irish Girl and the songs Phil the
Fluther’s Ball, Come back Paddy Reilly to Ballyjamesduff, The Mountains
of Mourne, Are You Right There Michael? and Slattery’s Mounted Fut among
many. He was also a painter.
