Douglas Hyde 1860-1949

Born in Castlerea, County Roscommon. He co-founded the Gaelic League with Eoin MacNeill and others in 1893 to encourage the speaking of Irish, Irish music and dance, and Irish games. He resigned from the League in 1915 because of its politics. He was Professor of Modern Irish at UCD from 1909-1932. He became the first President of Ireland under the 1937 Constitution. His works include Love Songs of Connacht, The Story of Early Gaelic Literature and A Literary History of Ireland From Earliest Times to the Present Day. He is buried in County Roscommon.
