Francis Hutcheson 1694-1746

Born at Drumalig, near Saintfield, County Down. He was educated in Killyleagh and in Glasgow. He became a Presbyterian minister and opened an academy which he ran for nearly ten years. He was elected, in 1729, to the Chair of Moral Philosophy in Glasgow. His works include An Inquiry into the Original of Our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue, An Essay on the Nature and Conduct of the Passions and Affections, A Short Introduction to Moral Philosophy and A System of Moral Philosophy. He  was buried in Dublin.
