King Edward Bruce

 King Edward Bruce died 1318

Edward was the brother of Robert who was king of Scotland. Together they had defeated the English at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314. He was invited to Ireland in 1315 by Donal O’Neill and the other Irish lords to hasten the defeat of the Anglo Normans. He was extremely successful and he was crowned King of Ireland at Dundalk in 1316. His brother Robert joined him and they took almost half of Ireland, but failed to take Dublin. The following year a superior English force under John de Birmingham arrived and defeated him in battle. Edward was killed in this battle. He is buried near Dundalk, County Louth.
