Bloomsday 2004

To mark Bloomsday 2004 I had intended to do a special section in The End showing the location of the graves of those people mentioned in Joyce’s works that are buried in Dublin. However, after perusing Before the Wake by Bob Williams and Adaline Glasheen’s Third Census of the Wake I realised that not only could you reconstruct the city of Dublin from the information in Joyce’s work, you could nearly people it as well! See Joyce's People for further information.

kane m.jpg (37350 bytes)         Many of Joyce’s contemporaries are already mentioned in The End and the graves of many more are to be found in my previous book Dead and Buried in Dublin. So I content myself with the grave of John O’Connell who was Secretary to the Committee of Glasnevin Cemetery at the time of the first Bloomsday and the grave of Matthew Kane who as the inscription says was the model for more than one character. Each year on Bloomsday a mock funeral is held to his graveside. Both are buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.
