William Edward Hartpole Lecky 1838-1903
Born in Dublin. He was an eminent historian whose most famous work was A History of England in the Eighteenth Century (eight volumes). Other works include History of the Rise and Influence of the Spirit of Rationalism in Europe, History of European Morals from Augustus to Charlemagne, Democracy and Liberty and various poems and essays. There is a statue of him near the campanile in Trinity College Dublin. He is buried in Dublin.
