Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu 1814-1873 Born
in Dublin. He was a novelist, short story writer and poet but he is best
known as a writer of the macabre and supernatural. After being called to
the Bar he turned to journalism and edited and owned a number of
newspapers. After the death of his wife, he withdrew from society and took
to writing novels again. He produced over a dozen novels as well as books
of short stories in this period to his death. His works include The House
by the Churchyard,
