Sir Hugh Lane

Sir Hugh Lane 1875-1915

Born at Ballybrack, County Cork. He had offered his collection of 39 Impressionist paintings to Ireland but after Lutyens’ proposed gallery was vetoed by Dublin Corporation he decided to leave them to London instead. After taking up the post of Director of the National Gallery of Ireland in 1914 he altered his decision again but the codicil was not witnessed. The paintings now alternate between London and Dublin. These can be viewed in the Sir Hugh Lane Gallery of Modern Art. He died on the Lusitania and his body was not recovered.
