Archbishop John Charles McQuaid 1895-1973 Born in Cootehill, County Cavan. He was made Archbishop of Dublin in 1940. He exerted an undue influence on the governments of the day. His opposition to Noel Browne’s Mother and Child scheme ensured that it was eventually dropped. He is buried in Dublin. The plaque reads: PLEASE PRAY FOR ARCHBISHOP JOHN CHARLES McQUAID ARCHBISHOP OF THIS DIOCESE OF DUBLIN 1940-1972 BY THE INERCESSION OF HIS PATRONESS MARY THE MOTHER OF GOD MAY HIS DEVINE MASTER GRANT HIM THE REWARD OF A LIFE OF DEVOTED SERVICE TO THE CHURCH HE DIED ON THE 7TH APRIL 1973 AND HIS MORTAL REMAINS LIE IN THE VAULTS BENEATH THIS PLAQUE |
