Denis Florence MacCarthy 1817-1882 Born in Dublin. He was the first Professor of English at the Catholic University. He was known as the ‘Poet of May’. His poems were collected in various volumes such as Ballads, Lyrics and Poems, Underglimpses and The Bell-Founder. Other works include centenary tributes to O’Connell and Thomas Moore, plays translated from the Spanish dramatist Calderón and Poets and Dramatists. He is buried in Dublin.
