Brinsley MacNamara
1890-1963
Born
John Weldon in Delvin, County
Westmeath. He became an actor with the Abbey
Theatre in 1909. His novel, The Valley of the Squinting Windows, was
published in 1918, causing uproar and forcing his schoolteacher father to
leave the area. He wrote other novels and plays including The Clanking of
Chains, The Mirror in the Dusk, The Glorious Uncertainty, Look at the
Heffernans, Margaret Gillan and The Various Lives of Marcus Igoe. He was a
founder member of the Irish Academy of Letters. He is buried in Dublin.
