Vivian Mercier 1919-1989
Born in Clara, County Offaly. He taught at various universities in America. His works include A Thousand Years of Irish Prose, The Irish Comic Tradition and Beckett/Beckett. He was married to Eilís Dillon and is buried with her in County Offaly.
