Kevin O’Higgins 1892-1927 Born in Stradbally, County Laois. He strongly supported the Treaty and became Minister for Justice in 1922. The Cabinet decision to execute prisoners during the Civil War led to reprisals and O’Higgins’ father was assassinated in 1923. Kevin O’Higgins was principally responsible for setting up the unarmed Garda Síochána. He himself was assassinated on his way to mass in 1927. He is buried in Dublin.
