Turlough O’Carolan 1670-1738 Born in Newtown, near Nobber, County Meath. He became blind in his youth due to smallpox. After being taught how to play the harp, he travelled the country making up tunes and playing them. More than 200 of his melodies have survived. His wake lasted four days and was attended by people from all over Ireland. He is buried in County Roscommon.
