Máirtín Ó Direáin 1910-1988 Born in Inishmore on the Aran Islands. He worked in various government departments until he retired in 1975. He is known as one of the major poets in modern Irish writing. He wrote nine volumes of poetry and one book of essays containing much biographical material. He won many prizes and honours including the Irish-American Cultural Institute Award in 1967, an Hon D.Litt from The National University of Ireland in 1977 and in the same year he received the Ossian Preis for poetry from the Freiherr von Stein Foundation in Hamburg. His works include Coinnle Geala, Dánta Aniar, Rogha Dánta, Ó Mórna agus Dánta Eile, Ceacht an Éin and the autobiography Feamainn Bhealtaine. He is buried in Dublin.
