Patrick O’Donnell died 1883 In May 1882, the in-coming Chief Secretary, Lord Cavendish and the Under Secretary for Ireland, Thomas Henry Burke were ambushed and killed by the Invincibles. One of their number, James Carey, turned States evidence and was pardoned and sent to South Africa. Patrick O’Donnell took the same steamer and shot Carey before the steamer landed. O’Donnell was arrested, returned to England for trial, was convicted and executed. This cenotaph stands in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.
