William Rooney
1873-1901

Born
in Dublin. He used the pen name of ‘One of the People’.
His first verses appeared in 1891 and he contributed prose and
verse to various journals including United Ireland, Seanachaidhe, The
Shamrock, the Northern Patriot and the Shan Van Vocht. He was a founder of
the United Irishman. His works invoked the heroes of Ireland’s past and
were extremely popular. He also was a great promoter of the Irish
language. He is buried in Dublin.
