Thomas Russell 1767-1803 Born in Betsborough, Kilshanick, County Cork. He founded with Wolf Tone, the first Society of United Irishmen in Belfast. He joined Emmet’s rising and was arrested in Dublin by Major Sirr, was tried, executed and buried at Downpatrick. He was known as The Man from God Knows after a poem written about him by Florence Wilson in 1918. Buried in the Church of Ireland, Downpatrick, Co Down. The grave slab was placed there by his friend, Mary Ann McCracken.
