Frank Stagg died 1976Died on hunger strike in a English jail. He had requested that he be buried in the same grave as his comrade Michael Gaughan. The Government of the day feared that his funeral would be turned into a propaganda coup and they took charge of the funeral. He was initially buried in a grave in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina, County Mayo. The grave behind was bought by sympathisers who erected a headstone. Fearing that the body would be snatched, concrete was poured over the grave and a guard was put on it. Some time after the guard was removed, the body was taken out through the adjoining grave and placed in the Republican plot.
