Francis
Sheehy-Skeffington 1878-1916

Born in
Bailieborough, County Cavan. He wrote for quite a few papers and
co-founded the National Democrat. His works include a biography of Michael
Davitt, a one-act play The Prodigal Daughter and a novel called In Dark
and Evil Days. He was a socialist and pacifist. He took no part in the
1916 Rising and was out preventing looting when he was arrested. He was
executed without trial the following day. The killing eventually caused
uproar at Westminster. The officer responsible, Major Bowen-Colthurst, was
found guilty of murder but insane and was sentenced to 18 months in a
military hospital.
Sheehy-Skeffington is buried in Dublin.
