Francis Stuart
1902-2000

Born in Townsville,
Queensland, Australia, of Ulster parents. He was educated at Rugby. In
1920, he married Iseult Gonne. He fought in the Civil War on the
anti-Treaty side and was interned. His early works include poems, novels
and plays such as We Have Kept the Faith, Women and God, Men Crowd Me
Round, The Angel of Pity and The White Hare. Following marital
difficulties, he went to Germany as a lecturer and stayed there for the
duration of
the war, making occasional broadcasts. He was interned for
this after the war and only returned to Ireland in 1959. His novel Black
List Section H brought
renewed interest but his war years still proved controversial. He
remarried in 1954 and again in 1987. Other writings include The Pillar of
Cloud, Redemption, Memorial and A Compendium of Lovers.
He is buried in County Clare.
