Pádraig Ua
Maoileoin 1913-2002

Born in Comineól,
Corca Dhuibhne, County Kerry. He was the grandson of Tomás Ó
Criomhthain. He joined An Garda Síochána in 1935 and spent much of his
time in Headquarters in Dublin translating legal documents and law books
from English into Irish. Many of his early works were written while he was
a member of the force. He retired after 30 years’ service. He was then
employed by the Department of Education as assistant editor on the Foclóir
Gaeilge-Béarla (1977). His novels include Bríde Bhán and De Réir
Uimhreacha. He edited Ó Criomhthain’s An tOileánach as well as other
works but his best known work is probably Na hÁird Ó Thuaidh. He is
buried in Dublin.
