Archbishop John
MacHale 1791-1881
He was born in the townland of Tobernaveen
in County Mayo. He campaigned enthusiastically for the abolition of tithes, the
repeal of the Union, Catholic Emancipation and the promotion of the Irish
language among others. O’Connell called him the Lion of the Fold of Judah. There
is a statue of him, John Henry Foley, outside St Jarlath’s Cathedral, Tuam where
he is buried.
