Captain James Kelly 1929-2003
Born in Leitir, Bailieboro, County Cavan. He was serving in
the Irish army at the outbreak of the troubles in the North of Ireland. Along
with more prominent others he was charged with importing arms in 1970 - the so
called Arms Trial. He claimed it was a government sponsored initiative. Although
he was found not guilty, his career was in ruins. He spent the rest of his life
trying to clear his name. He wrote two books about his experiences - Orders for
the Captain and The Thimbleriggers. He is buried in Dublin.
