Father
Patrick Lavelle 1825-1886

He was born in Mullagh, County Mayo. He
became a national hero for his stand against proselytism in Toormakeady County
Mayo and for publicising the evictions which took place there. Also tried to
bring back the Cross of Cong to Cong, by smashing the glass in the Museum and
making it off with it. He supported the Fenian cause and delivered the eulogy at
the graveside of Terence Bellew McManus. He regularly wrote letters to the press
on behalf of the Fenians and came into regular confrontation with Archbishop
Cullen.
Buried in Cong Abbey. There is a plaque in
the back of the new church - Pray for the soul of Patrick Lavelle who in dark
and evil days successfully fought the battle of faith and fatherland.
