Jerome J Collins died 1882Born in Cork. His funeral journey was one of the longest on record. He was a civil engineer and emigrated to America where he founded Clan na Gael. He was a pioneer in meteorological research and was the scientist meteorologist aboard the Jeanette which set sail in 1879 to find the North Pole. After much hardship the crew all eventually died. Collins body was brought back from Siberia all the way to Cork, a journey of nearly 14,000 miles – it first went via Hamburg to New York where it picked up the remains of his mother before returning to Cork. He is buried in the graveyard of Curraghkippane in County Cork. (Cork Historical and Archaeological Society Cork Holly Bough Christmas 1975) |
