John Redmond 1856-1918Born in Ballytrent, County Wexford. Led the Irish Parliamentary Party after the death of Parnell. After the Home Rule Bill was passed but suspended in 1914, Redmond called for Irishmen to go and fight in the war – a call which divided the country. He pleaded for clemency for the leaders of the Easter Rising but was ignored and his party was swept away by Sinn Fein in the events that followed. He is buried in the family plot in St John’s Graveyard, John Street, Wexford. |
