PP MacSwiney died 1884 Peter Paul as he was familiarly styled was Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Gregory the Great and Chevalier of Honour. He was the owner of the drapery firm of the same name that occupied the site where Clerys now is. He was twice Lord Mayor of Dublin. He is buried in Dublin. His wife who is buried with him was the youngest daughter of the sculptor John Hogan.
