Sir Earnest Shackleton
1874-1922

Explorer born in Kilkea, County Kildare. He
was on Scott’s expedition to Antarctica in 1901. He returned again 1907 and
journeyed to within 100 miles of the South Pole. A further expedition led to his
ship, the Endurance, being crushed and he and his men escaping in small boats to
Elephant Island. Shackleton left them sailing through nearly 1,000 miles of
treacherous seas and was able eventually to rescue them. He was buried at
Grytvilkin Cemetery, South Georgia, Antarctica. The grave was marked by a
headstone of Scottish granite in 1928.
